Let’s Get Ready For Sunday!
Below is some information and terms that will help us better understand the Sermon this week.
This Weeks Passage Is:
Traditions and Commandments 1Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches. 5And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not walk according tothe tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?" 6And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
"'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'
8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men."
9And he said to them, "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.' 11But
you say, 'If a man tells his father or his mother, "Whatever you would
have gained from me is Corban"' (that is, given to God)— 12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do."
Read the passage a few times this week so that you will understand it better when Sunday comes!
Words To Know Pharisees - Pharisees were very religious people in Jesus’ day who held to a very strict lifestyle. They said it was according to Gods law but if often added restrictions that were not part of the Bible, like fasting at certain times that were not ordered by God. God only ordered a fast once a year on the Day of Atonement even though it was ok to fast at other times, the Pharisees would enforce people to fast 2 times per week!
Fasting - Fasting is about not eating food for a period of time...to concentrate on personal purity and God's purposes
Bridegroom - In Jesus day, the Bridegroom was the man about to be married. He was surrounded by his friends who celebrated with him, both before and after the ceremony. This would be a time of feasting, praise and joy, not a time for sorrow and fasting. Jesus was here on earth with His disciples, which was a time which should be cherished. The time when Jesus would leave this world was coming, and then would be a better time to fast.
Un-Shrunk Cloth - In those days, just like today, cloth was often made of wool which would shrink once it was washed and dried. Well, let’s say you got a hole in your old pants that you have washed a lot of times and you took a new piece of fabric that had never been washed yet to sew on to patch up the hole. What would happen? The new patch would shrink but the pants wouldn’t because they have already been shrunk. The patch would be all bunched up and probably rip again.
Wineskins - In this time period, wine was often stored in the skins of goats. When wine is freshly made it ferments, which means the sugar starts to turn into alcohol. This process gives off air which stretches the skins kind of like when you shake up a soda and open it. You can see how all the air comes bursting out! New wine would only be put in new skins that hadn’t stretched out yet. What would happen if they put new wine into bags that had already stretched all they could? They would burst open!
Garment - Is a piece of clothing. In these times, clothing was not thrown away if it had a little tear in it. Clothes were often patched over and over again. Cloths were very expensive and most people only owned one outfit each.
Fasting is not eating food for a very important reason such as: Public crisis, Personal trouble, Coming trouble or Minister selection.
. "'Even now', declares the Lord, return to me with all you heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.' Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity." Joel 2:12,13
